g'day fellas ladies,
bought a speedglas helmet 3 or so year ago and am constantly getting flashed even when on most sensitive setting on 13, am looking for another brand but getting mixed review on most, any help much apprieciated.

Im not familiar with speedglass, but check batteries, and make sure the sensors are clean... might save on buying a new one.

Recomendations, Esab Eyetech, mines about 7 years old now, although on its last legs now. No replacement bits either, apart from cover lenses and cushion pad.

thanks mate for your reply so swiftly, i've just changed batteries and clean sensors when i change lens cover (every 3 weeks or so), not bad helmet, but for the price it doesen't even slightly measure up. mate of mine owns a miller digital and he reckons that it the ducks nuts in the shed but out side its rather ordinary and the miller is close in price so either cheaper brands are doing it better or we got duds

I've a couple of Speedglas' and I rarely get flashed so perhaps you've a dud unit. Apart from the headbands which I find break easily they've been good bits of kit. If I had to buy a new one tomorrow I'd empty piggy on an Optrel.

I have been and got the new 9100X speedglas, its brilliant...so clear to see what you are welding, and the light shade of 3 is so bright and with the side windows as well its like being outdoors! Only small gripe is the headband retchet, doesnt stay up that great.
- But even if you get flashed it won't hurt you will it, probably annoying and take a bit for eyes to re-adjust.

go for a sperian e680 and you wont go wrong with it for the price and spares are readily available for them
i prefer 1 of those to a speedy anyday
and they are waterproof aswell to a depth of 1 meter

Same here, never had any trouble with my Speedo, and I use the full adflo kit on mine also...Ditto on the Optrel....

13 is a darkness setting not a sensitivity setting, read the instructions and set the sensitivity and the delay as well as the shade.

I had similar problems with my old Speedglas. I've got a Miller elite now and never had any problems with it, same goes for all the Optrel screens that I've had (well apart from my OSE packing in a coupel of weeks ago ).

If you are using a TIG Welder, make sure the helmet is compatible with it
When I bought my Nexus TIG Welder it would not work with any standard helmets. and like you was getting flashed all the time
I went thru' about 4 helmets, and kept taking them back to the shop for exchange!
I did some research and found that you needed a special helmet to work with my type of TIG welder.
I bought a Speedglass 9002X and it cured the 'fault' completely

Its generally the cheaper Helmets that struggle on DC tig.

Nowadays good quality DC tig inverters have a really smooth output, with very little current ripple and its this ripple or electronic noise that the cheaper helmets rely on to know when to switch on/off.

The larger brands of helmets all do versions which are suitable for tig welding.

I have never had a problem with Speedglas I have used the 9000 series a lot and also I now have a Optrel, both very good bits of kit. Don't think you can go far wrong with either of them.

I had exactly the same problem with speedglass I cant remember the model but for £160 it was pretty disappointing, I sent it back and bought a £60 Sealey, got over 3 years daily use from it, it still works ok but its a bit battered, I'm now using a new Parweld XR 915H, cost less than £50 off ebay, its in use everyday and no problems with flashing on DC tig at all

I am sure the x is just for an extra large screen and the xx has a larger screen again.

I think you will find the 'X' Version is designed for working with Invertor TIG Welders at very low amps

oh ok i don't do much tig, but the one i've got is the 9002x, i've now been recently promoted(demoted) to fab shop. in fab shop it go none too shabby previosly on site with sunlight etc it went crap completely out classed by cheaper brands.

That's strange, I have never had any trouble with my 9002X, it has performed perfectly.
I weld thin steel with a pedal, and even at really low amps it has never failed.

some times on site it would blink as in go dark and go light constantly, batteries were new and i tried all setting combinations, was just frustrating when your welding on trusses etc in situ, and trying to keep a +-2mm tolerence. once the arc was struck it was fine, must have been light variations it confused the sensors, in fab shop it goes ok, i don't do much low amp stuff, so can't say how mine goes.

Forklift flashlights make the speedglass go on and off all the time too....very annoying!
But other than that, i love it works a treat!
The new graphic edition is awesome!
