Spot welding aluminium sheet

Hi

A chap over here spot welds 18 gauge aluminium panels together with an ordinary steel type spot welder ..I've seen it and it works great .

You place a thin stainless steel or similar , say 1" square , under the electrode tips and go ahead .

I have heard of the aircraft industry doing this
