Spot welding question

I need to attach 0.8-1mm sheet steel onto 3mm steel. Distortion must be kept to a minimum. Would spot welding be suitable for this?

Well, since no one else seems to know I have answered my own question. I made a spot welder from an old microwave I got off Freecycle. It will weld up to 1mm sheet metal together with no problem but it doesn't work with 1mm to 3mm sheet.
