Spray painting timber tips and tricks please.

I'm about to fit a new staircase and want to paint it with a small HVLP spray gun I've bought before I install it. I'm hoping once set up it'll save me loads of time and give a better finish. Hopefully I can also use this to paint epoxy primer on my Surf trailing arms, diff casing etc later in the year.
I have one of these and an air filter / regulator.



I already have a 3HP 200 litre compressor and air lines etc, is there anything else I might need to do a good job here?
Any advice welcome as I've not really painted with an air gun before.

Lots of masking tape and sheet polytene, or youll spray dust the whole house!

I was thinking of doing it in pieces before installing it or at least giving it a primer coat.

For primer I would use a roller. Much quicker, less to clean up.

If it is true HVLP there will be very little, if any, airborne spray to worry about, I have an Apollo turbine setup and I wouldn't bother sheeting up if I was spraying indoors. It really is that good, your setup may be different but I would give it a go and see first.

I tried one of those electric turbine spray guns on my shed. Ended up more on me than the shed!

It was either you or the brand/type of gun then. I fed my family and paid a mortgage with mine and I sprayed a LOT of cars with it. I am too old and decrepit now to do that again but it does come out for the odd job. I really could use a new gun for it as I have literally worn the original out but spending around £200 for something I would possibly use twice a year doesn't compute for me:

I use the exact same gun for applying epoxy mastic.
I use the 2.5 tip and it works very well.
For standard epoxy the 1.8 setup will be the job.
With the different tips I'd say it will spray whatever you want.
Make sure your air is dry and everything is clean and you will be good to go. But practice on scrap so you can get the results you want before starting on the real thing.

I'm repainting a steel staircase in the house at the moment, (when the boss confirms the colour) and I'm just going to use a gloss roller.
I might spray the handrails to get a smoother finish but if I do it will be a lot of masking up and I'll use a smaller touch up gun to try and contain the mess. And lots of forced ventilation and an empty house for a day or two.

Just a thought!! When I sprayed all the wood in my shepherd hut at first i used ordinary wood primer and had some bleed through issues from the wood. I then used Zinsser cover stain primer paint, it sprays on lovely and leaves a good finish for top coat and stopped bleed through. I spray all my wood work now as you get a much better finish.

I see what you've done there. Convinced Mrs @dobbslc that you really need it to do a domestic job and in fact you wanted it for the Surf all along!

This is of course the perfect solution and certainly trumps mine. I am now looking for a new Minion who will creosote my fence! (it is a bloody long fence).

thats why you use knotting to stop the resin bleeding through off the knots. 90 percent of decorators dont use it now there either 2 lazy or dont know

I also used knotting, but as some of the wood was recycled and i could not be sure of any unknown chemicals or reactions, the Zinsser kept everything at bay.

@jordhandson thanks for the heads up on the bleed through paint stopper! I've got some proper old knotting solution but didnt know paint with it already in was available
If it doesn't rain I might get some paint on tomorrow...
