Spraying Motorcycle Plastic Panels

I'm looking for some advice on the best method/materials to use to prepare motorcycle plastic panels for respraying.

In the past when I have resprayed plastic car bumpers I have used an initial coat of Lechler epoxy primer followed by 2k high build primer(to help remove textured surface from bumper). Can I use this same combination for the motorcyle plastics? Would epoxy primer be the best choice for this or would I need to use a plastic primer instead? How do the professionals spray these panels? Thanks.

Mainly used really, but would also be interested in the different process used on new panels.

new bare plastic..scotch pad , degrease and plastic primer then high build (check on the back of the panels for a code to say what type of plastic, then buy a suitable one)

used ..sand up the paint with something like 240/320 on a da , then straight on with high build

Good idea to use an anti static panel wipe or you will attract the dust from everyone on this forum!

when you rub plastics, it charges them with static electricity, to a lesser degree, steel car panels can also charge. Once charged, it will attract dust like you wont believe as soon as you disturb the air with the spray action and ruin your paint job. Steel panels, you can ground to earth to discharge the static when spraying but plastic you cant so you would use an anti-static panel wipe just prior to final tacking.

about 20 years back we had some anti static gun you blasted over plastics and it made them dust free , had all radioactive signs on the box and got took away becauase they dangerous lol

Sounds a bit scary. Would have chosen the safer option to de nib the finished job i would imagine Steve

You can still get the anti static guns now tbh i didnt rate them very much work ok on brand new bare plastic but were just a hassle

oh id not seen any sinse then , these ones were pretty good the new ford bumpers were terrible for static and they pretty much stopped it all
