Hi

I have a dust exstractor fan that I want to use as a generall fan
To exstract dust, welding fumes, paint spray, etc
I have a 12inch fan blowing air into the garage.

The fan moter I want to use appears to be sealed, its a perform dust exstractor model no CCBDE
I purpose to exstract the air Low down, send it up a large 18 inch tube, as the air is going up
the tube spray a fine mist of water to take out the dirt in the air, then to the fan to dump the extracted air
This is a diy setup the water will be filtered and recirculated

don't bother with the water just blow the dust out to atmosphere that's all I do when shotblasting

Run the input through a cyclone. Upside down parking cone would do. That's what I'm building now...

Looks a bit like this.

Input (suction) goes into the inverted traffic cone and is pulled straight out of the top, into the fan and out though the other red tube.

As the input gets swirled around the inside of the cone, dust and crap falls out through the bottom into the big bucket. The air sucked out from the top of the cone is clean. Bucket needs to be sealed and vacuum resistant!

PS it's not an optimal design for a permanent installation but I want to trolley mount it so I can drag it around the garden.

Haha, thanks, it's all very virtual so far though I have assembled all the required parts.

If you mean for extraction, yes. A system like this should pull even the very smallest of dust particles out of the air. It works because any air bound dust particle is going to be heavier than air and will be thrown to the outside of the air vortex where it simply falls into the bucket. It does this because the "centrifuged" clean air is being drawn out from the centre of the vortex.

Cyclonic filter will be good for dust but lousy for fumes.

Regarding fume scrubbing, squirrel cage fans are normally pretty good at producing pressure & flow, would a cheaper, easier method be to bubble the air through a water trap?

Not so efficient or elegant as your spray tower idea though...
