Started Welding Night Class - A few pics

Well i've just had my 2nd evening class learning TIG welding. So far they'e really just left us to it, to practice, although the tutor has been going round giving a few pointers but i've really enjoyed just practising.

My welds are getting better but still along way to go

my main problem is inclusions in the weld. Either when i touch down with the tungsten or from the mill scale on the plate they've given us to practice with. At the end of todays session the tutor recommended i give the plate a going over with the grinder beforehand as i could actually see the scale fizzing off infront of the weld pool

If your earth lead is connected to the bench, I'd spin the crap off the top where your working too, whilst you've the grinder handy.....

Hi there

Where are you doing the course in Sheffield ?

I live in Mansfield and tried in vain to find a course closer than Burton on Trent [ 40 miles ] , Sheffield is about 27 miles from me DOH

We had our induction last night and start welding next Thursday , have you already done the PAD ? .

To my untrained eye you welds look very good , we are using a steel with no mill scale on it for the TIG , the MIG and Stick guys get mill scale sheet and also they are welding on thicker metal than the TIG test pieces are using.

I'm doing it at Chesterfield College which is even closer to you!

I've opted for the 13 week Level 2 ABC award, where you get an award in just 1 of the welding disciplines but they are quite happy for you to try all of them and bascially do as you like as long as you do enough to pass the one you've opted for.

They're good in that they'll let you bring stuff in fom home (projects) if you want to do it and also make use of any of the machines they have there as well

Tell me much more and I will slit my wrists

I am doing a 10 week EAL Level one course ? I think :-

1 x PAD
1 x outside corner
1 x Fillet
1 x Butt Weld

Selected TIG but would like to try stick as well one night , and yep have some of my own projects to take in.

ps is that the college welding bench ? we are expected to clean ours off every night with a grinder so they don't look that bad , luckily the booth is TIG only so there shouldn't be any splatter

That was my thought as well when I did my course (Bristol) the bench was always cleaned before we left.

Nice welds tho m@tt I loved doing Tig at collage,the welders they had were ace! get stuck into alloy asap it's hard to master but such a good skill to have.
