Starter wiring layout

Trying to connect a new starter and I’ve lost the notes !
Where does the ring terminal with the black cable go? Negative earth 12v.thanks.

what's the other end of the wire join to?

I'd guess it's coming from the alternator, in whcih case it goes to the but with the big battery cable connected to it - can't quite tell which one from the photo, probably the bottom one

I think it goes to the Battery in terminal, on the solenoid.

the one with the eye could be the exciter , that would be the small term on the solenoid, some have a wire that goes to the same terminal at the bat +, that goes to alternator output if fitted, see it the wire is live when the key is turned to start position

Which suggests it’s the +be back up to the key switch from the battery side of the coil as per TYA

All other manuals I’ve found don’t have black. It’s brown but same job.

On a starter motor, you've got batt +ve, and excitation.

That's all, -ve is the engine block.

On my gas Hyster there is a fist full of wires at the starter, battery lead, earth lead, one to the alternator sharing the same crimp as the ignition feed, one to the starter solenoid and another to a terminal that back feeds the ignition circuit when its cranking.

Not messy celery! On traditional ignition systems, there is an output from the solenoid which shorts out the ballast resistor, the idea being that the 9V coil still receives about 9V during cranking, for easier starting. Normal running drops 3V across the ballast resistor.

it doesen;t look big enough to be the battery feed to the starter - thats why I guessed feed from alternator

Wires available are Lucar female spade to the solenoid,red, and a black,fairly heavy,all of these come from the engine direction.

you need to trace the black back and see where it came from

it's most likelty an alternator feed or a battery negative


if it's from the alternator it goes to the battery connection on the starter

if it's battery negative it goes to one of the bolts holding the alternator on

The yellow goes to the solenoid spade,red to the bottom m8 stud,then the black? I assume from dodgy memory,to the top m8 stud.

The thick black one I’ve attached to the same stud as the red cable goes to,is from the battery positive.

Only logical place for the stray is under the other terminal on the starter along with the battery cable, the top one is to the starter windings, nothing goes there.

So that would assume it’s a positive,despite its black colour?

The manual I linked to above used black for +ve

There’s not much convention on vehicle wiring it seems much less plant.

Everything there will be +ve. It just depends if you want it permanent or switched live.

Easy enough to check Nick, One of those wires will be going to the alternator and the other will be a live feed to the machine ( ign etc), on mine they shared the same crimped ring terminal, looks like yours has had two new separate ones fitted.

as bob said, that's the only logical place for it's too short to reach one of the mounting bolts

could well be the feed for the lights/ignition/whatever

my gas forrklift is like that, saves running a wire from the battery over the other side
