Starting out blasting - questions

Hello all,

I've lurked for a while as I've normally found my answers by using the search facility, but I need some fresh help with this one as it's totally new to me.

I'm looking into doing a bit of blasting as part of my vehicle resto' job which I'm easing myself into (recession forced me out of my other). I've just bought a Compair/Holman towable diesel powered compressor so shouldn't go short of air.
Now I've got to find the rest of the equipment to go with it and gain the knowledge.

Does this look any good?

I plan on doing just the occasional shell, engine and aluminium cylinder heads.

What I would really like is some kind of guide or book I can read as my questions aren't very specific, I've found nothing yet, any ideas where to get info from?

It would but with that size of compressor it's small, you'll be forever filling the pot up. Also I'd be looking at one with a fast fill.

u havent said the capacity of the compressor as to what jet sizes u can use . eg a 90cfm compressor will need a max nozzle size of 6.o mm to run it check your comp size and then google hodge clemco portable pots and then work out whats the biggest set up u can run

I've also been thinking of doing some blasting on my bug for that kind of money I think you will be better off getting a dual blasting pot, if you have a good size compressor to fill the pots tho.

What! 100kg or media should do at least half hour of continuous blasting if you've not got it set too rich, probably nearer an hour I would reckon with 130 cfm and a 5/16 nozzle.

it all depends on what grade ,size ] media u use as well

Ok, thanks for the replies, yeah some specs would be good, but right now I don't know much about it apart from it's a H213OS, working pressure 7bar, max: 12 bar.
TBH, I bought it blind in a local property auction, freed the brakes off, put a new battery on it and it fired right up (Deutz engine apparently). It then died, but It looks like it's out of diesel - just hope it doesn't need bleeding as I don't know how to do that yet.

I've tried buying some manuals for it on Fleabay, but no response from the seller yet.

The first problem I have is it's fitted with a towing eye rather than a hitch, so I'm split between trying to change this or the one on my van for a combined pin & ball - I can see a pin and eye rattling like ******y when towing though.

First off.
Buy a pin and ball hitch for your van, far more industrial than a normal ball hitch. Yes it will rattle, but a pin ball hitch is around £25 to £30 for a good new one. A decent braked trailer coupling will come in around £100.

What model Compair Holman is it? I contacted Compair direct when I got mine and got manuals for them e-mailed back the same day. It's a user and parts manual that covers the general use and air end of the machine not much about the engine unfortunately, but the Deutz engines are very robust. Unless the cam belt is severely stretched they run, no injector pump and timing, each injector take it's pulse directly off it's own cam lobe.

My compair ran fine when the seller showed it me but by the time it had been towed 40 miles home didn't want to know. The traveling had stirred up the crap in the tank and blocked the fuel filters.
First off remove the cover off the lift pump and clean out the filter gauze. My advice, drain and remove the plastic fuel tank, drain and wash it out thoroughly, fit new fuel filter cartridge mine had been removed and bypassed compounding problems.

Don't run too much oil in the separator / accumulator and keep the compressor as level as you can whilst in use.

Woohoo she runs!

The fuel supply pipe on top of the tank had a rubber elbow which had deteriorated over the years and cracked wide open, the pump was just sucking in air, no fuel. Once fixed I just cranked till it pulled some diesel into the engine and she runs fine.

Just got to give it a good service now and find some suitable blasting equipment.
