steel protection

Hi,

How do you guys protect your raw steel when it's stored outside.?
Oil or grease coating is out. Red lead is porous as far as I know, so what else is there.?

Primer usually last a good while.
What sort of stock is it.....?
Could you build a bit of a lean too affair for it?

My workshop security bar is mild steel painted with red lead..only rust marks are where it has had the paint damaged...been in all weathers for 18 months
