Steel Stock Prices

Is there a website that gives a ballpark figure of what steel stock should cost?

Its been a good while since I bought any mild steel stock but I needed some 50x50x5 for a project. I called into my local builders merchants & they quoted me £20 for a 6.1m length, delivered to my door. I thought this sounded cheap so I bought 2 lengths. Is this a good price? If so I might get a few more lengths for stock.
The only downside of their steel is that it's stored outside so if it's not fresh stock it tends to be rusty!

That seems a good price for delivered and especially if VAT paid as well.

This is what I was paying 4 months ago, all plus VAT and a £10 delivery charge (2 miles) for any quantity.

That was from Parkers steel stockists.

I am also fairly sure my box was 2.5mm wall, that makes your prices very good indeed.

I was about to say that you must be joking then I saw the divide by 3! and it all made sense

That's good price if you ask me. Local steel stockist wanted 30 including vat for 30 box 3mm wall. Last time I payed them a visit, total rip off.

I've recently bought 40x40x4 angle from Dyfed who tend to be the cheapest by far for £16 +vat so I would say it's a good price.I'm assuming yours was box

There is thread on the Series2 Landrover forum at the moment where all these people recommending internet suppliers as the cheapest around, metalmania,metals4u etc. The divide by 3 is pretty accurate. Sometimes those places win if you want a small amount with multiple cuts and that's where they make their money. I have shown quotes for exactly the same stuff I bought recently and people are still saying someinternetplace.co.uk are the cheapest, you can't help some people

Yes it's on the wagon road near the bus station, do you know where that is or need directions?

Just had a thought, it may be called Franklin's now, was parkers so always known it as that

Glad you posted this up. I'm up in Ayrshire and they have a Depot in Dumfries which is only an hour away from me. They have a good range and hopefully they'll be able to give me a quote for some material I require for my post Driver project. I need a 102x102 RSJ which seems to be a hard to obtain size, but they state they can supply RSJ up to that size.

I did look at that site & got a shock at the prices, dividing by 3 makes them more realistic!

I forgot to say that the 50x50x5 was angle, not box section. Looking at those various sites posted it looks like that was a good price. I might call into the place again & price up their other steel stock. I normally keep a selection of box, angle & flat in stock but due to the high steel prices I've not bought any for ages & my stock is nearly gone.

There is another place 20 miles away who keep a good range of steel, all indoors and they will cut it to length but they will only deliver large orders.

I made the mistake of using them once, then I found that the same stuff is under half the price from F H Brundle. Delivery is £10 if you don't make it to the £150 or so threshold which is quite fair.

My fabby likes to think of it as "cured". Parkers are good on price if you make a sales enquiry and then ignore them for a couple of weeks, I do this quite often if there is no hurry. The sales team will be on the phone asking if you are going to make the order, just say no because its too dear and they start chipping away at the price. Its not uncommon to end up with 30% more discount than their original "best" price.
