Steel work bench

Well after my run out through Castleton I had to make a 3m x 1m x 1m work bench for a Ops customer of mine. I had a nightmare with FH Brundles this week as I waited all week for the steel to arrive and I should of had this made and in Birmingham yesterday! I wouldn’t mind but it’s only 150x50x3 RHS, 75x50x6 angle and 3000x1500x3 sheet so standard stuff but I only got it yesterday afternoon!

Anyway, got all the cutting out the way and started by trimming the sheet down to 3000x1000. I laid this on my garage floor as a square template to place the frame on and tacked everything together.

I need to wait for a lift now to turn it over so I can check all is level before welding it completely but everyone is busy until later this evening. I’ll be welding the 3 sections angle under the bench top between the two centre sections to strength the top but want to make sure any bow in the sheet comes out when I lift it the right way up

The fun thing will be trying to get it on the back of my Ifor ready for delivery Monday morning

Sod it!!!!

Flipped it on my own, it was quite easy to get it onto its side, it was getting it on its feet that was tricky.

lifted the bottom up with a crow bar and stuffed a log under either end. Basically deadlifted it onto its back and the same again onto its feet. Just struggled slightly as I had the bench too against my chest the second time round.

All looks square so I’ll weld it all up now. The wife is taking my daughter to see little mix tonight so I can have a good soak in the bath, put the fire on and probably fall asleep on the couch again like last night while the boy plays Fortnight with his mates online!

2 solo lifts stand in my mind.

1st was a panel for my shed. 2400*2400
Old 2*5 timber covered in 18mm ply. Then moisture barrier 2*1 battens and feather edge.
Ended up using a few lengths of timber with a notch at the top. Leant it against the panel and picked it up until the notch slipped under and repeated again until it was high enough to push properly.
Not recommended but you find interesting ways of working when your always solo.

Agaisnt a boundary so no choice.

Been there myself....1.8l engine....looked tiny on the work bench so I decided I'd move it myself....it was very heavy as it turns out!

It’s a good solid table but if I was making one for myself I’d fit an 8mm top
