Just a quick question - for MMA what width for a stringer bead do you aim for (i.e. no weave)? I usually end up with about 2-2.5 times rod dia but for some rods such as castolin eutectic for disimilar metals it can be quite a bit wider?

Without getting the calipers ....
Its more the profile of the bead,not its width.there are pics in the tutorials^^
Beyond that,you can alter your speed of travel(within reason) to produce a smaller or larger bead e.g. to fill a bevel

I don't think there are any hard rules to follow, as above it's more a question of how it looks.

It's controlled by the travel speed, and of course how many amps are used has an effect on things too.

worked for several years in mining operations where all of our welds we subject to inspection especially we we did 0-unlimited qualifying our stringers could only be 1 1/2 times as wide as the rod we were using this will definitely pass any bend test they put it through

That's pretty fast travel speeds you must of been doing to get that size. So if you were using a 2.5 mm rod the bead width from toe to toe was less than 4mm?
