Stripping A Chassis

Hi What is the best angle grinder tooling for stripping a cruddy/rusty land rover chassis,wire brush or one of these flappy things ,Cheers

Wire brush, well that's what I used, combination of wheel and cup types. Make sure you've eye protection and probably a dust mask, they kick up a lovely amount of crap.

let alone the strands of wire that come off of the brush. these can stick into the skin even through clothing, not too badly though as they only go into the skin about a mm or two so easy to pull out
wouldnt want to get one in the eye though.

I had the same problem, got one of those cheap leather welders aprons from Aldi.

Always worth a look in the Thompson local under 'blast cleaning'. You'll get a much better finish and it will be really clean. Doing something like this by hand is extremely hard work and time consuming. There are corners where it's very hard to clean with a brush etc. Sometimes using a rotary brush you actually polish crud rather then shift it. It looks clean, but when you bang it, sheets of rust start falling off.

ALWAYS use goggles with them cup brushes-even for a few seconds use. I have had the wire fly off and spear the goggles and actually stick in. You are down to your last pair of eyes.

Wheel + grinder. Flap disc's not what you want on a chassis probably already thinned from the inside.
Cheapo wire wheels, those wires do fly... and stick in. Doesn't hurt, but can do when you move/sit etc and push one in further.

I like a full face visor, ear defenders (dirt cheap and saves the annoyance of tinnitus), and a mask.

If there's old wax, heatgun and scrape that off as far as poss. Wire brushes will just stir it up if thick. Little bits they can spin off sometimes, small enough to get flung before melted/stirred.

Thanks for all your replies,wire brush it is then,Chipper your mention of a heat gun is excellent,never thought of that, it will help get the old undrseal/wax off,I note that you enquired about chemi blacking,we do that here where I work at Bodycote,the process involves cleaning with anodax,33% hydrocloric acid and immerion in salts bath at about 300C [sodium hydroxide],this leaves a nice black finish but it is not very durable,ithink that DIY oilblacking would be as good,thanks again

Cheers Chris on the blacking info. Heatgun's a good thing, mine was a tenner delivered and well worth it for the wax.

Yep Dons hoss,also loosely translatable as an old nag ready for glue,,sums up my landy!!Just gotta add alot more hot melt glue in the form of weld,

I used strip & clean discs to do mine, bit time consuming, but no more so than wire cup brushes. The oakey ones seem to be the best / most aggressive. They will remove old paint rust etc. I scraped & de-greased with thinners first, then de- rusted, left the original black coating on where sound, just keyed it with 180's all over before painting.

The finish is Screwfix black metal paint thinned 10% with celly thinners and sprayed 3 coats. Holding up well so far!!
