Stripping paint from Ally castings.

I have a small job to rebuild 2 outside ally light fittings.
But the paint on 1 seams to be a sort of powder coat, the other is flaky, but the ally is badly corroded,



The black fitting is the powder coat, but is in good shape on most of the whole fitting. But I need to remove it as the test peace I tried the metal paint did not adhere.



This is the worse of the 2 fittings.

Any one know a good method to remove the paint and not remove the ally?

It has to be chemical and NOT caustic soda.

The best thing to strip powder coating that I've encountered is a witch's brew called Atlas-T http://www.eurochem-northern.com/paintshop_powdercoaters.html

This will still remove some ally if left too long, it's a case of dip, wait 30 secs remove what coating you can and repeat.

Dichloromethane bases stripper may work, it's a lot slower and slightly safer but won't attack the ally.

The latter will depend on the quality of the coating. Also you use it with a film of water on top. Hydrochloric acid can form in the water after some time, so make sure the workpiece is submerged below the waterline.

Quite honestly, that lamp wouldn't have been expensive, and reasonable replacements are available. You'll end up paying out far more in stripper and paint than a replacement would cost.

I know that.
But the job, after I have striped the paint off is to get 2 Men In Shed members who have a few personal issues involved. It is their plan and I am just doing the stuff H&S will not let us carry out at Men In Shed

We have 2 old lamps, one white, one black. The plan is to make a good one from the two. Convert them from screw fixings to bayonet fixings and have it fixed to out shed.

Thanks for that advise.
I went to a paint supplier, on the trading estate. They were kind enough to decant 3lts from a damaged container.
I don't know the brand. but as it was free, ish. Jar of coffee.



First results are very good.
There are some areas of stubborn remains. But a third attempt should see it all gone.

A job for the 2 members with scrapers and a wire brush.
