structural steel fabrication tips and tricks ?

I have recently started a job with a structural steel fabricator and am looking for some advice , I'm not entirely green to it and can put most things together without too much difficulty but I would appreciate any tips and tricks anyone could offer, thanks

read the drawing, measure, read the drawing, measure, read the drawing , measure, read the drawing, measure. Then make a plan.

When the bloke sends you to find the sky hooks just give him a wry smile.

Measure it, measure it again, Mark it out, check the drawings, measure it again, and make sure you cut the right side of the line.

Marking out white pens really help scribed marks.

I am a design manager on large scale construction projects so I coordinate with structural steel fabricators on a daily basis.

Do you use Tekla modeling software? What sort of projects are you working on? BIM level 3d projects or sheds etc?

I run design team meetings and all fabricator drawings are thoroughly reviewed for clashes etc by architects, structural and mechanical engineers. Through Procore workflows that I setup.

I can say that always be careful to allow fitting tolerances in structural steel. And be sure that channels and similar don't deflect excessively under their own dead weight. Diagonal bracing flat plates with no allowance for fitting can deflect badly on site. Those are the most common issues I see on projects. But to be fair the steel fabricators are smart guys and rarely make mistakes.

luckily I'm a workshop gremlin (fabricator), done a little bit of erecting cant say its my idea of fun

I did steel erecting for a year or so 30 years ago, I actually liked it, the drinking at dinner time and then back up the steel was good, plus the drinking in the evening was also good, wife told me later she was worried I was becoming an alcoholic!
Nowadays I only have to smell alcohol and I need a pee.
