I teach basic welding and fabrication, and creative craft courses at a local college on Thursdays. This is a candle holder made completely from scratch by one of my learners, even the cups were formed from flat sheet and the scrolls formed using the colleges Metal Craft scrolling jigs and ring roller.

Thought i would post this up as it was a 16 year old scallywag with an acid tongue that i managed to gain a bit of respect from that made it

As his tutor i am quite proud considering the kind of learners i have coming from lets say, less desireable areas.

Thanks, i am going to pay to get it powder coated for him as he wants to give it to his mum for Christmas. I think she'll love it more knowing he made it

Get him to wire brush it, and wax it, cheap as chips

Nice one both Scally youth and FJ.
FJ I reckon the best thing is to get Mr Scally youth to do the finishing as well.
Maybe help him do it, but involve him in it.
Waxing or whatever it would be good for him to see it being finished.
I reckon he would polish it to within an inch of it's life.
Might be a way of getting through that job is not finished until it is finished.
Nice work and a delicate job getting these guys involved in anything.

I never thought of waxing it, what kind of wax should be used on steel and where could I get it from?

Chunko, I think your right he probably would polish it until his fingers bled. He was as pleased as punch when he finished it. I had an idea of trying to get the rest of the group to buck up and follow suit and make some more candle holders of different designs, and should we be able to sell them then the money could go towards sending them go-kartin when they finish the course. Just got to try and get it approved by the head of department

I tend to use wood wax, like Briwax, but a cheaper version.

Give it a good power wire brushing, warm it up then put plenty of wax on, buff it up when its cooled.

If you heat it up a lot, you can get the metal to darken a bit.
It's cheap and pretty easy to do, I do myself on some things if I'm not heading towards the powder coaters, of if I want it to look aged a bit.

Be patient with them skallies, I was a complete drop out going nowhere till I learned how to weld and it changed my life!! Now I own a profitable business and am a young ambassador for the Prince's trust trying to help more troubled youths the light!!
