Stupid Question

I have (for my sins) a cheap Wolf/Dakota 100Lt belt drive machine. The stupid question is ... Can I (after removing the motor/ pump assembly) up-end the tank and transfer the drain to the 'bottom' of the tank. I am horizontally challenged for space and would like to have the motor/pump remotely mounted above the tank.

not a problem, if you weld the platform on to the top and alter the pipework and put some legs on it and fit the drain off on what becomes the bottom

And welding on the tank means you need to do a pressuretest at 1.5 times workingpressure.

I think I might be making a simple vertical frame - bolt it to the ground, bolt the tank using its old feet/wheel brackets to the side of frame, and mount the pump and motor on a new bit of plate on the top of the framework, save cutting the old mount off the tank or any welding to the tank. Sure it woud be fine, but every time I thought it seemed to be taking a bit longer to shut off, I'd be feeling a bit nervous about my welding . . .

Thanks, folks. My thoughts are pretty much in line with yours but without the welding on the tank. Motor and pump on a separate frame above the tank. Use the existing frame on the tank to secure it to a new vertical frame. I guess there may be some plus sides to this apart from not having to bend over to reach stuff, isolating the tank from the noisy bits for one and vertical space for some sort of intercooler/ moisture trap.

It's a good idea if you need the space, I prefer to leave mine on it's wheels and maintain it's mobility

If you splitting the tank from the compressor could you put the tank outside? It would save space inside and you'd have even more room for an intercooler and drains.

Do try to arrange the in-feed well below the out-feed. Water from the compressor is less likely to end up in your air supply line.

My compressor receiver is vertical. It takes off from the top and the compressor pump is at ground level. Can’t remember where the inlet is but likely about a third, or less, of the way up.

Put the whole thing outside in a box and it'll be blissfully silent as well as space saving!
