Stupid questions

Good evening all!

I need to ask few stupid questions. It's time to put the paint on my kit car, started from bare metal, etch primed all over and been given a very light rub down. first coat of primer applied, gun finish is nice and flat. painting it with cellulose.

I realise some of these questions are a bit how long is a peice of string, I'm just after a few pointers.

1 Do I need to rub down between coats of primer?

2 is 1200's too fine a finish for the primer?

3 How many coats of primer?

4 How much primer would I expect to need for an average (escort sized) car inside and out. 1 litre at 50/50 has done just over 1 coat.

any help would be appreciated.

I'm no painting expert, but, I'd not rub down between coats of primer unless I screwed up. I think 1200 is way to fine for primer. You might de-nib with 600, lightly.

2/ yes
3/ deff how long is a piece of string.(aim for at least 3 coats)
also demend on what primer you use.
4/coat=1 ltr.

another stupid question

I managed to get 3 coats (50/50) of cellulose on the shell yesterday, but ran out of time to put the final two coasts (60/40 then 75/25) on. As I will now have to wait until Thursday to put the final coats on, will I need to flat the paint before I commence spraying?

weather is being kind to me, managed to get the final coats of paint on the car! The finish is much better than I had hoped for, and basically I'm "well chuffed" with the end result Besides a couple of bits of overspray to buff out, I think it will only require a polish.

The only problem is having picked up a few inclusions on the bonnet. I think some dust has collected on top of the light fittings in the garage, and has blown off whilst I've been spraying.

I don't want to end up with too much paint on the front end, would it be feasible to 1200's (or higher) the bonnet, and give it a coat at about 80/20, just to bring the gloss back?

could do that,but if you thin it that much,you will soon polish through it.
better mask well and re do bonnet 50/50

Hi,
I will post some pics this weekend.

Does anyone have any idea how to remove month old masking tape? it's not on anywhere finish critical although it is on celly paint, just forgot to remove it! I was going to try white spirit first, then methylated spirit.

hot air gun brought off the masking tape, the remaining residue came off with a quick wipe with white spirit.

now for another daft question, How long should I leave the paint before applying wax polish? I was thinking of using hand glaze first as it will allow the paint to breathe, and giving it about 3 months before re-glazing and waxing.
