SUDS coolant pump

hi, im currently in my 2nd year of college and i have 2 written exams monday, althoughi ve been revising, there is 1 question that I cannopt find the answer to, i was wondering if anyone could help me
- i need to know how a suds (coolant) pump works.
any answers would be appriciated.

Pretty simple really. Its a motor, an extended shaft with an impeller on the end which is housed in normally a cast body, the impeller spins in the housing, the housing is submerged in the coolant tank. There is an inlet and outlet on the cast body and that's about it!

Scrounge a pump off a scrap washing machine or a dishwasher - exactly the same principle, or even a water pump off a car.

They are usually centrifugal fan pumps.

Can't see why a washing machine pump wouldn't be ok.

All the suds pumps I have seen are just submersible centrifugal pumps, probably that's all you need for an exam question, if you need more just google "centrifugal pumps"

The only problem I can think of is would the plastic react with the coolant?

A washing machine pump isn't submerged, it's connected by pipes but that should be easily getable around.

my only reservation on submerged pumps is if they are magnetic or mag drive, for obvious reasons

soon as I finish my bender I am making trays for everything... god I hate working with oily metals & swarf

It'd be crap - literally. The fuel pump will clog up in no time. You can get small fish pond pumps for very little money, they work ok.

Julie - A suds pump is a simple centrifugal fan as others have said. It pulls coolant in at the center and the fan flings out outwards where it's forced through an outlet and up the coolant pipe. Very basic.

I was worries about clogging with these... from metal fines as they are usually wet mag drive

Are the pumps low volts and earth leak protected or can they be shaft driven ?

aquatic pumps are normally a free magnetic rotor in a sealed winding set...mag & shaft are water cooled.... hence my concerns

The suds pump on my milling machine is a mains powered long shaft pump, the motor sitting vertically on top of the tank with the actual pump in the bottom of the tank. The return to the tank is just a pipe in an open filter just like a large tea strainer, which I clean the bits of metal out of occasionally. Suds are an emulsion of oil and water used for both cooling and lubrication.

The return to the tank is a bit slow so I bleed a little from the pressure side to just below the table to create a bit of suction. It also helps keep the pipe work clear of debris.

That sounds like a decent industrially safe pump ..no plastic to get degraded by the coolant , motor above highest level of coolant so no colant should ingress the pump motor body . Return coolant & bleed off running through a basic filter into the reservior . The pick up for the suction head should also be 30 mm or more off the bottom of the reservior to allow for sediment buildup /settlement out on the bottom of the tank.

You may even discover a big magnet in the base of the reservior to pick up any fine steel cuttings like my magnetic car sump plug does.



See what you can cobble together for your ideal answer and I'm sure if it seems not quite right there are many who are able to point you to a better answer.

He he... the suds pump in my surface grinder didn't work when I got it - you could hear it spinning but no pumping! When I dismantled it the impellor had completely erroded away from the grinding debris chewing at it. This pump is mounted in a big reservoir that has five levels of cascade 'waterfalls' - returning coolant comes in at the top, and cascades down passing through the five trays for stuff to settle out, and yet the pump still got blasted. It was the standard pump fitted to most Britsh machine tools made by The Colchester Pump Company. A fractional horse power 3 phase motor, long vertical shaft, and simple 'star wheel' impellor in a cast housing.
