Suggestions requested for a spray gun, epoxy primer.

I have a good collection of suction guns. I bought a gravity feed gun off Ebay which looked fine, but leaks so badly it is unuseable. Also it has a poorly fitting cover for the paint. So, I am looking for a replacement.

Budget maybe up to £30 ish, no objection to secondhand if provenence known. I would like a plastic cup with a screw on cap. Main use will be to spray Jotun HB epoxy primer. I like the Star and Kestrel guns I have, but haven't found any quality make so far. There are a couple of "untested" ( oh yes?) Devilbiss on Ebay, but a new one is out of my price range.

The HVLP suction gun I have is a Clarke with a 2.2 air cap, but I don't get any reasonable atomisation from it, the resultant surface could be mistaken for the surface of the moon. ;-)

What nozzle size should I go for?

HVLP or conventional?

Do a search on LVLP. There is a red gun with 1.5mm nozzle that is ideal for epoxy primer. Think mine came in around 40 inc delivery.

I used the Clarke PGF14 and seemed to be fine for me. I used Jotamastic 80 thinned down 15% with that gun. Also have a Sealey gold gun to try as well.

shell out and buy a decent gun that will last u many years . i bought a devillbiss pannel gun 30 years ago it cost 60 quid then and still going strong . u only get out what u put in u cant get a rolls royce for the price of a 3 wheeler van

I have a devilbiss for top coats but also have a kestral gun for primer application, it's good for the money but not on par with devilbiss for quality, even when cleaning the gun the quality difference is apparent, the devilbiss is thinner resistant in its coating but the kestral is not and the outer finish leaves traces of green on the rag I wipe it with, since using the devilbiss I am in need of a good primer gun and will probably buy a pri pro when I paint my next project as I also now believe you get what you pay for, I also get far less over spray from the devilbiss.

go buy some second hand untested devilbiss gti ones.

i spent a month just buying up the cheap nastly looking ebay ones and ended up with 4 in varying states and conditions.

stripped them all down, worst one had stripped threads on the suction tube so was duff but i got a 1.4 mm needle, another 110 air car and alot of bits for spares.

i paid £70 for all 4 , even bagged a mini pressure setup pot and system for one to. i made 3 good guns from the 4, 2x 1.4mm systems and a 1.8mm one, all using the gti 110 air caps, and as i said i have a full gun i used for bits/spares which was handy.

devilbiss and higher end units are serviceable, you can change every gasket and O ring in them and if you get an air leak just buy a gasket set and change said gasket and away you go.

Very good advice, thankyou all. As I was itching to get on with the job, I ordered what looked like a decent gun, from a professional supplier (via Ebay) http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/281165895128?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649. It has still not arrived. ;-)
