Sun Lounger

From being a long time lurker on the forum, thought I would post up something I knocked together in a couple of hours yesterday afternoon.

Wife and kids went out, and I finally got some workshop time. Tidying up, I found an old sheet of steel, one thing led to another and this guy was soon bashed out, only having made a rudimentary shot bag out of gravel, sand, a plastic bag and some duct tape.

That sounds like the voice of experience re: the washing up.

I followed the method described by many beforehand, (Chunko in particular) of spray adhesive and a coating of paper on one side. Then after looking at various images of lizard scultpure online, I drew free hand the outline on the paper, and a quick trip round with the plasma had the profile cut out.

From there it was just bashing with a hammer, and welding together a hidden wall mount so that there are no visible fixings.

Nice one boneypro.
I must have a look it the shot bag method of metal shaping.
The photocopy and glue method is a great way of using images.
I like the way the dimples look part of the design.
Where would we be without google images?

Yours works well being much larger.
Is it stainless or mild steel?

Chunko it is mild steel.

The shot bag is something I wanted to try for a while, I made it large as it was to fill a blank space on the wall, but also left room to shape the metal for a first effort, no point in trying something delicate for a first effort in a new technique.

The dimples do add to the effect, happy coincidence I have to admit.

I was expecting a sitting on devive.
One thought. Boneypro you mention a 'hidden wall mount' that makes the thing even better.
You see so much public sculpture with mountings sticking out all over the place. A lot of these people have been trained as 'artists' yet they seem unable to see that the mountings are not a part of the sculpture. Drives me mad.
if I remember I will go down town over the next couple of days to show what I mean.
I want a cordless angle grinder to carry with me at all times.

Chunko, I understand your frustration entirely.

From looking at some of your work, with the rust finish, particularly the small seahorse piece, (which I absolutely love, and of which I am trying to think of something similar which would not be a blatant copy), I ordered some Ammonium Chloride today. I have not seen a thread on this before so apologise if you have detailed previously, but can you share some detail of the process.

What ratio chemical to water do you make the solution. On the seahorse you say it is laquered, do you simply rinse and dry the piece and then laquer? Can I ask what laquer you use?

I was thinking of trying to make a turtle shell effect with some masking to create shiny and rusty areas to define the turtleshell pattern. Just playing with ideas at the moment.

PS I like your re-naming of my forum nom de plume. You are calling me Boney Pro which I quite like. The non-typo'd version harks back to my love of fireworks and being a part time pyrotechnician. I might switch to your version in future

lovely sun lounger!! simple but effective, the texture is great. I really need to get a plasma cutter!!!

The hidden bracket, great. I ruined one of my mirrors recently as it got late and i just wanted to finish it and just welded a loop on top, looked pants, instantly regretted it, but then couldn't be bothered to cut it off and redo it, will do next time!

Boney pyro
Another pyroma=nainac, there seem to be a lot of us here.
Ammonium Chloride?
Make up a saturated solution.
Get a mug or whatever container, fill it with hot water and stir in as much as you can until it stops dissolving.
I scrub it on with a green scouring pad, it seems to do a good job of cleaning the metal.
Then leave it alone. Keep an eye on it for light amusement, it wil go a greenish colour, then sometimes black, then orange over a couple of hours. Leave it outside for a few days until you are happy with the finish.
