Swager project

I've been planning on building a swager for a while now, but I recently acquired some parts which should make the build quite simple and very powerful.

I work in a gym, and this was an old Toning table exercise machine. It was basically a chair that sat up and lay back repeatedly under variable speed. Anyway, one of the linkages broke and the company who service/repair them is no longer in business. I offered to repair it but due to H&S my manager wouldn't let me. So instead I offered to dispose of it.

Theres a big motor, geared right down to anything from 0.5 - around 3rpm.

You guys think this will be powerful enough? I was thinking of buying a cheap swager off eBay and beefing it up a bit.

It should be powerful enough but lacks a reverse. Note IF you ditch the controller then you will need a driver for a 180 v DC motor.
It should be possible to add a reverse facility switch.
In process myself of powering my bead roller using a modded mobility scooter drive assembly and have hacked up a push bike gear set, 7 speed rear hub to go on motor and the 3 speed crank to go onto the beader thus allowing to find an ideal speed. Will be driving it from a SMP from ebay. All this when time allows!

nearly forgot, stripped loads of bearings and linkages off it too, they look very substantial, I might even have a go at building my own swager instead of buying one.

Reversing that motor is just a matter of swapping the feed wires. Since in only draws 2.5a you could use a switch but if you're going to do it under power use a heavy one because switching DC causes arcing.

Just remember that slowing the motor down is achieved by reducing the voltage and therefore the power it produces. If you slow it too much you might stall it under load and damage the commutator.

HeHe, I'm helping them scrap two treadmills this weekend, the scrap man can't be bothered picking them up as the price of scrap is so low.

So thats two bloody great looking motors, two motorised rams and two computerised touchscreen monitors. The rest is going in the boot of the brother in laws fiesta that we are weighing in.

I'd weigh the car in separate to the rest - you get less for a car of mixed materials, than for separated scrap.

So, Heres the first part of the haul..

I still have 3 rollers to remove, one motor and ram (smaller one bottom of pic) and two foot plates that look to be made of a very hard plastic, about an inch thick and 2' x 4'

I'm seeing a possible belt sander using one of the rollers and a motor.
