Taking electric motor apart

Still trying to fix my forklift.
Getting interesting now. Same technology on electric cars now.
DC batteries running through an inverter to 3 phase ac.
Anyway got the steering motor off. Looks like a gearbox on the end of it.
I am assuming I need to remove the circlip on the shaft first?

possibly not, are their not some cap screws down in the untapped holes, Which when removed allow the gearbox to slide off as a complete unit?

It would be unusual but not unheard of to have to disassemble the gearbox to remove it from the motor.

I have undone the 4 screws/bolts - just tried gentle pulling. Maybe just tight.

Can you see any fixings inside the motor as I wouldn’t have thought the motor end plate would have been suitable for threaded connections but not sure of torque involved.

Motor fixed into hole using 4 bolts into end cap. Very much like a car starter motor.

I have undone the 4 screws/bolts - just tried gentle pulling. Maybe just tight.

Did these bolts go right through to the motor end casing? If so, can you now turn the gearbox relative to the motor.

check there is no grubscrew securing hte gearbox to the motor shaft

As has been said, I'd very much doubt you need to strip the gearbox.

You may however have to split the motor, as the bolts may go from the inside of the motor in to the gearbox. Can you see any countersunk bolt heads in through the motor casing gaps?

As m_c mentioned, it’s unlikely the gearbox will need to be stripped. Would think The motor shaft will have a gear on the end which meshes with the gearbox much like a planetary gearbox. Check for bolt or even nut heads in the end of the gearbox through to the motor end plate

I have now spotted 2 smaller cap headed screws - will try again on Sunday - had enough for one day

Yale MR14 ~ MR20 "Motor locked - Mod 06" - tip
I had few occasions of "re-repair" after someone's intervention because of "Motor locked - Mod 06" error on Yale MR14-20 models,the last one was few days ago...
When this error appears, the truck can be turned on but immediately show the error and can not be used.
The first thing you will notice in this occasion (if you are familiar with this model) there is no immediate steering wheel centering (there is not at all) which is a standard function of truck after switching on though there are errors or not.

Repair manuals says:
ALARM: 06 MOTOR LOCKED
COMPONENT: Steering motor encoder feedback
ACTIONS REQUESTED: Check encoder connections and renew encoder if necessary

When you open the hood you will see that the steering motor really does not work,you will disassemble it from the chassis and even then if you try to turn on the truck motor will not work and that is (usually) a trap.

The steering gear/reduction gear is along steering motor and check of gear is often overlooked by technicians and usually there is the problem.
Motor and gear must be disassembled when you want to change the encoder on steering motor and interesting thing about steering gear is that it will work ( not always) for a while after disassemble/assemble procedure on the motor but not for long,but it's seems the problem is solved...
Advice is to disassemble steering motor and gear on the spot (it's really simple) and turn on the truck.In most cases motor will spin and you know the problem is in the gearbox,not in motor's encoder.
This case is very common on truck with over 5000 working hours.
My practice is to dissasemble and grease gear box on every 2000 hours, if you do,pay attention on gears inside, because it is planetary reducton gear.
You will save customer money, your time and your reputation.

Google the Danfoss part number on the gearbox and you will find a drawing of it somewhere. That will tell you how it mounts to the motor shaft.
