Tapered shaft adapter

I have an engine with a tapered shaft which I would like to adapt to take a pulley, many hours of googling has found lots of parallel to taper adapters but only one (wrong size) the way I want.

I measured the exposed section of shaft 27mm (1.06") and it tapers from 22.7mm (0.983") to 20.15mm (0.793") and I wondered if there were any industry standard tapers that would help with the search?

The adapter would be retained by a bolt in the end of the shaft.

That appears to be approximately a 10° inclusive angle. (10.242°)

Might be easier to take out the shaft, have it machined parallel to 19mm or 3/4" & cut a key way so you can fit standard pulleys.

That would be a last resort as it's on the end of the crankshaft.

Unfortunately I don't have a lathe (or the skills to drive one )

There are set tapers but I can’t remember the name at present

was going to say just get anything that fits that taper/ cobble it up with whatever it takes to fit a pulley but as you haven't a lathe not much chance

After some research I found out which make/model of mower it had been fitted to and it drove via a centrifugal clutch. Found the driven bit on a popular interweb auction site and for the princely sun of £1 and a 10 minute detour on the way home from work.

Fits the taper perfectly and even came with the retaining bolt

Next question is whether to get it turned down to the diameter of the centre boss and fit a taperlock pulley or is possible to machine a "Vee" on the perimeter to match my dynamo pulley?

If that Ransomes? flange is wide enough get the groove machined into it, if not, get a pulley and bolt it to the flange using the two bolt holes. An old car crank pulley could probably be made to fit.

If that's also the flywheel, you can't just take it off because the engine needs a flywheel!

I'd go with the idea of bolting a pulley or a pulley mounting shaft to the outside of the flywheel.

If that Ransomes? flange is wide enough get the groove machined into it, if not, get a pulley and bolt it to the flange using the two bolt holes. An old car crank pulley could probably be made to fit.

Yes flange is 20mm wide so plenty to machine a "Vee" into, just trying to find out how fast I can safely spin the dynamo.

The engine has it's own flywheel on the other end of the crank

I think the flywheel you have is a counterweight, that engine has no governor and revs quite freely.
You could fit the clutch and driveshaft to flywheel and put a pulley on the end.
Then engine can be started off load and clutch engages as revs increase.

I could have had the complete clutch assembly, but it would have been a lot more as it has the friction material which buyers want, he sold me the flywheel for a quid as most folks don't want that bit
