Just handed this one over to it's new owner today, the brief was "I would like a metal dog, I'll leave it up to you" plenty of scope for artistic interpretation and no grounds for complaint lol!!

He was very happy with it

I would have coated it in boiled linseed oil but it's going inside so no protection needed really, however, the springs were a bit rusty in places and light sanding made the rust stand out.
So - to avoid sanding back to bare metal I used Turtle Wax black trim wax for car rubber stuff. It soaks in to the rust giving it a dull black finish. I also used it on the rest of the springs and some shiny bits to dull them down a bit.
The customer likes the "agricultural" style welding

Also, the gears rotate by turning the tail, the synchromesh still works and the bearings in the head spin round so I didn't want to clog anything up.

Yeah, I always wonder where you source all the odd & abstract materials you tend to use, Mr Grub.
The same goes for Mr Tron here, too - I assume you both have resonably friendly local scrap-yards!

Nice job on the dog, though - regardless of material source!

Regarding my supply of stuff, I have a few mates that look out for things for me. "contra trading" is our system, I do engine Dyno work or make something for them, they forage and bring me presents :-) Also, A friend of mine owns a busy car repair garage and let's me take parts from the scrap bin (I still owe him a large sculpture for his reception area, must press on with that).
Never throw anything metal away!

Cheers, after I'd finished it I thought how I could have connected the gear shaft to the bearings - too late - ces't la vie !

Sorry, no idea of spring vehicle, I get them from a good friend whose nephew works at a Kwik fit place, just turns up occasionally with a box full , they are all broken so would have just been scrapped.
