Telescope Case

wasn't sure which section to post this in, but this seemed the closest fit !

the design is still a work in progress (as i don't have a welder yet!) and will probably be made with 1 - 1.5mm mild steel then painted and foam inserts glued in.

thoughts and comments please.

Last thought rather than using photobucket try posting the image in the thread.
Click go advanced in the reply thingyat bottom of page.
Then click the little paper clip thingy in the top bar says atachments when you scroll over it. Click Browse, choose image double upload.
Exit it and then scroll over the paper clip thingy, and click on the image title.

There you go.

yep, love my telescope !
nothing flash or fancy, but i get a good view of some of the great sights in the heavens
[edit] there is also a solar filter in it so i can get a nice view of the sun when we et some! [/edit]
just photographed the tube here, there is a proper tripod and an equatorial mount so that i can track the objects (assuming i line it up right!)

Id be inclined to build the case from the sheet like you plan, but the inserts with the radius cut from them, make them from some hardwood or reasonably thick decent softwood.

I`d almost do away with the mounting blocks in the case. I`d go for a high density foam and make the whole base to support your pride and joy with a matching top. The foam isnt too hard to carve out to suit your 'scope

i had thought of that, but as it will be my first welding "project" i wanted to do as much as i could with as many angles etc. as possible.

was planning on putting some of those luggage clip straps (don't know the proper name) on the supports and securing them with either bolts, screws or rivets.

I think the ones you mean are called 'over center latches' like these

i mean the plastic snap together ones.
one side has 3 prongs (the outside 2 you pinch to undo the clasp)
i'll see if i can find one lying about to take a piccy.
