temporary covering to avoid rust

Hi all, I've had to cut out some sections of the sills on my 4x4, in order to weld new metal back in. the thing is, i wont be finishing the job for another week or two. the surfaces are ground down to bare metal at the moment.

hope this isnt a silly question... is there anything handy that i could apply to the bare metal, to protect it in the meantime? i was thinking maybe a coating of oil or something similar.

Weld through primer is best but not everyone has that to hand. A good smear of grease will do it.

Spray a fine mist of oil out of a old bottle. Some grease contain water.

This would have done it and cheaper than the usual weld through primer. diyes nice and quick.

If you're talking about a surface that you have already ground down and it's going to be exposed to the weather I would tape some polythene over with some duct tape as you're only going to get a little surface rust which can be removed in a few minutes with a flap disc or sanding disc etc.

You could just spray some paint on but I wouldn't be putting anything greasy onto a surface that is just going to be left for such a short time in the weather as you'll have to degrease it.

I've had a number of panel taken down to bare metal in the garage for a few
months and I protected them with Gibbs Brand, as used in the tutorial on this site. I found a supplier on ebay and I am very impressed with the results, no rust at all and its safe to paint over on the off chance any is left after prep for primer

I've been using the Screwfix old version of cold galv spray for years. This is a new "formulation" and nowhere near as good as the old stuff. More like silver / aluminium paint. I recently cleaned some areas of my Spridget back to bare metal and gave them a couple coats of this spray. Rust has quickly appeared over a lot of the areas covered. Sorry but doesn't get my recommendation based on this experience and I'll stick with the traditional grey cold galv spray instead of this silver version.
