Within the Pressure Systems Safety Regulations 2000 the question is asked: Is the pressure x volume of the pressure vessel greater than 250 bar litres? If YES - then a written scheme and inspection certificate will need to be issued to comply with the legislation.
This calculation takes the pressure rated in bars and this is multiplied by the capacity of the tank in litres. This is commonly found on a plate on the receiver.
e.g. MWP 11 bar 50 litres capacity
In this example the maximum working pressure (MWP) is 11 bar multiplied by the 50 litre capacity, which gives a rating of 550 bar litres. 1 bar is equivalent to approximately 15 psi. As a general rule air receivers with a diameter in excess of 12 inches operating at 150psi will probably need to comply with the legislation.
The other components of the air compressor set (i.e. compressor and motor) do notneed a statutory inspection. If an air compressor has no receiver it does not need an inspection. Hydrovane manufacture compressors with no receivers and so are exempt from the legislation.
An examination normally takes place once every twelve months. However the type and frequency of examination are defined by the written scheme.
For the majority of air receivers the first examination is a full internal thorough inspection. The next inspection, twelve months later is a working external examination and the following year another thorough. I.e. a thorough examination every two years.
With the agreement of the customer the written scheme can be amended so that both the thorough and external examination are completed at the same time and therefore only one examination takes place – every two years.

Do you insurers not specify a test period?
Normally 12 months with most, although a lot of people are not aware it a requirement.

Parm, may know this but from memory, I think fixed pipe installation also require inspection if it holds over a certain capacity.

In the regs there's no hard and fast. I usually only go to big places and they are all tied up by corporate insurers for annual inspections for things like lifting equipment, pressure vessels etc

Zurich used to do ours every 12 months, even had a fancy tester that measured the wall thickness.

Give you local compressor place a call will be cheaper for a small on if you drop it of with the rather than a on site price. this sort of work s there bread and butter, shouldn't be much.

We have so much gear on site there are 2 inspectors employed full time to check it all!.

Ha, I asked the agricultural engineering shop across the way if he new before reading this and he didn't either and has three.
It was brought to my attention by my new insurer on his visit but he didn't know the term either!
So mine is like 50 litres and it needs checking to be compliant being made Jan 2014 it's already out of date?
I assume it's an internal visual through the drain port and not any great money to get sorted? If I find someone who can

Normally its a job to remove all the ports and fit blanking plugs, then fill with water and preasure test. Remove water & re fit all pipework. Depending on construction, if may also undergo ultrasonic testing to confirm thickness. its then normally stamped with SWP and a test date.

What test is that ? The one round at the shop gets an ultrasonic test and it's ancient so it has glands fitted which are removed and a visual inspection carried out then refitted and run up to pressure and pressure released. It is over 50 years old and the tank has lost hardly any of its original thickness. No water involved it would make a complete mess.

A standard hydraulic pressure test.
Water is used as if the vessel were to fail under pressure the water will safely leak out, whereas if air was used the following explosion could prove fatal.
I presume your inspector is happy with the tank to just perform a visual and use the ultrasonic to prove thickness, however ultrasonic is poor at detecting corrosion around welds on sockets and flanges.
