The compressor I was given

The compressor hose out has a coupler like this on it....

What sort of coupler on the hose do I need? it says Male and there's also a female version,but looking at the coupler on the compressor I can't see whether its male or female as both look identicle

The one in the pic is a female coupler with a 1/4 BSP male thread, the 1/4 BSP Female will have a female thread, but still a female coupling.

This is the corresponding male coupler with a female thread, you can get them with male threads or a hose tail.

Male or female refers to the threaded end. You need one of these if your hose doesn't have a nut on the end.

The make/female refers to the screw pipe-fitting side of the coupler. Look at the pictures of the two, you see the compressor side is different.

Note: there is also a male/female version to match the fitting on the hose or tool (tools usually use male, hoses usually use female.)

Another Q if ya don't mind?

I noticed that some have doubled their CFM with two compressors parralleled together but thats if you have two compressors to begin with.....but what about one compressor and another tank,could this work? I think the other tank would have to be in series?

Regards to the proffessional compressors having a refrigerated drier unit,would it not be possible to pass the first section of the air line through a small fridge like a caravan fridge and modify the cooled air to disperse the water down a leg drop within the fridge?

Another tank would just add capacity. The compressor would be off longer but then run longer to build pressure.

Replacing the pipe from the compressor to the tank with a long coiled one or even a radiator/fan will cool the air before it enters the tank. The water will condense in the tank and be less likely to condense in the lines. I plan on running my line back and forth across the fan.

A filter/trap does well enough for most uses.

You can't increase the output by increasing the tank size. What you can do is get more volume to drive say an impact wrench until the tank empties but it will take longer to fill up. A bit like charging a car battery with a 5 amp charger, you can get 300 amps for a few minutes, then you have to recharge the battery over many hours.

You can connect two tanks using a single pipe between them, the air will find it's own way along the connection to even up the pressures.

A small fridge won't make that much difference, there's a lot of heat to shift.

Paradoxically one way of getting cool air is to get it hot. If you run your compressor at high pressure the air will get hotter, the higher temperature will dissipate more heat then when you drop the pressure in the regulator it will cool down.
