The horse's head

Following on from the Pentagram I made for the Witch, she has shown an interest (started out "would it be possible?...." we all know the script) in having a horses head made from small, 10mm 12mm size, stainless nuts.

You know, sort of like this:

But of a horse's head. I was thinking of looking for a porcelain or clay example in a junk shop (aren't they all) and using it as a template to lay the nuts on as I am welding them. Anyone have any alternative suggestions? She wants this for in the house, so no pressure then.

I think you posted that somewhere previously Bob, she has deemed it too nice for the garden, it is very creative. I dare not show her the deer head @Fraserb has made otherwise no work will be getting done for some time whilst I create similar.

A long time ago, whilst still at school, I used to make quite a few things like this with an oxy acetylene welding set, I just don't fancy spending all of my time for the next couple of weeks doing this. I would certainly enjoy it but I have quite a bit on at the minute and it wouldn't get done. Then I would have some unhappy customers! The Boss would be happy though so there is that.

There's one of the original maquettes by the Falkirk wheel that are only about 3ft high.

I've always found animal mannequins cost a lot more than ordinary human ones. A stylised horses head shouldn't be too hard to shape out of glued together polystyrene. Then coat it in plaster then some plaster bandage. My first sculpture I used papier mache, but it took ages and was a pain for burning. They don't take long to tack up, but the one I made out of nuts I brazed.

That is actually a very good idea, I can make it so the finished size would be how she wants it, I have some casting foam somewhere so I could start with that. (I have been saving it for a Cannon build, it can wait). It is going to be stainless nuts and I am going to Tig them.
