Thermostat & 90 degree elbow advice.

Got a little project on that involves cutting a twin cylinder head in half but will need to source a couple of bits.

Basicly I need to make an external Thermostat, I will fabricate the housing myself as that's easy enough BUT I need to find a smaller Automotive / Car / Bike, etc Thermostat smaller than what is originally used.

The original thermostat has an OD of 49mm with rubber, 44mm without and is 71*C. Would like one alot smaller and also lower temp, between 50-60*C would be great. Something widely used so will be cheap as chips.

Any Ideas what will fit the bill.


Also will need some 90* elbows made from Ally OD about 22mm, cheap as chips though. If these are not avalible then no worries as I can always turn some Ally bar and get it welded at a 90* angle.

if you use a lower temp the engine wont be as efficient and if you also use a small stat will it restrict the flow ?

Remote stat housing - 400 kawasakis used them and some other bikes maybe fazer and thundercats . but I think you will struggle to find smaller dia thermostat - possible that modern scooters may use them. I will have a look, cheers

The RD stat is way to high esp for a tuned motor, common mod is to use an RGV250 50* or a Snowmobile 55* stat. These are £25 & £30 each. Problem is they are the same size and I want a slim one as its going to be inline.

With the size, the RD will not run without over heating without a stat, it needs some preasure there for the pump, using a smaller one will only be about 30% smaller, I dont think that this will restrict flow by 30% but if anything may aid flow, also being a lower temp flow will start earlier so should be ok.

Its mainly about cost, not that I carnt buy one for around £30 but the project has got to be cost effective, going to cost me about £20 in matirials plus the stat plus time.

Think an Aprilia RS50 Stat may do the job and there about £15 new, just hunting now for something

snooper yes that's mine. There are a couple of warm up runs on the Dyno aswell at Taffspeed. My built pipes, TSA Design, made 52.5 rwhp from just a stock motor and was not even where the pipe should peak, few more RPM would give it more hp, stock they make about 40 rwhp

The top end has been striped since then, got a set of ported barrels, skimed & recut head, TZR 250 Reed blocks, Reed spacers, Pod filters, slotted stator about 5* advance, Modded powervalve controller so its now programable.

Got slight jetting issues which I'm just waiting for some new jets and its back to the Dyno. If I hit 60 rwhp first time out will be chuffed to beans BUT my aim is 70 rwhp. Thats all on low reading Dynos.

I used 750ZXR parts a few times. It's a neat little casting which bolts to a frame tab with a couple of M6 screws.
