Royal Mail has announced it will hike the price of first-class stamps by 30p due to "very real and urgent" financial challenges.
The increase, which will kick in from 7 October, will see the price of a first-class stamp rise to £1.65p, while second-class stamps will remain at 85p.

It's not often I send a letter but I'm shocked the price has jumped that much

thats a big joke just had nearly all our mail delivered in one day suposedly 1st class and its took 10 days to get it all got my overdue tax return and hospital apointment 2 late last time pity. they didnt have any competition to speed it up

Just in time for Christmas. A couple of months for us to get used to it.

Had a package delivered today ,size of a standard letter and weighing about 50 grams . Posted on 17 July . what happened to the 2 deliveries per day ?

Send emails rather than letters , it's usually provable that the email was sent & received unlike Royal Mail's paid for ,stamped , registered or recorded

I'm having a hard time I last sent a stamped letter must be over 6 yrs ago , sent a few parcels that RM were the cheapest option but they send them over to the predecessor of Evri where they took five months to be undelivered and returned to me with IIRC 21 different address / routing changes labels stuck to the package

We get intermittent post some weeks, then 10 days nothing.
Had post first class all of it posted on or before the 22nd of last month, came yesterday 5th Sept
The whole businesses is a shambles with people who are not fit to run a sweet shop.
With staff at the top being paid big wages and bonus

Or simply dumped in an industrial refuse bin or a tidal river etc.

what little we get gets delivered to the local pub/cafe....
we go around once a month for a meal and collect the odd mail...
Parcels we're a bit moreon te ball.....
we have NO address.....it's xxxxx and xxxx on the hill......hahaha...

Perhaps but most of it is a well thought out, strategized exit.

RM simply don't want to honour an agreement held in law, to deliver mail.

It is not where the profit lays for them and there is very little Governments or Ministers regardless of their bluster can do, they walked in to it, many imo knowingly.

From the get go, from the breakup RM did not/do not want to deliver our mail, it's that simple.

Best way to achieve this, long term, price themselves, the mail delivery side into non-existence.

On a more constructive note, why they haven't reduced their (letter) deliveries to every other day I don't know (well I do know, it's in their SOP's). Do we really need letters delivered the next day? Anything that important now goes via email surely?
Not good for employment of posties I know but would cut costs dramatically would it not?

I've thought long and hard about this and I really can't think of anthing that RM delivers to me that I can't wait anoher day for. It's only ever bills, junk mail and the occasional £25 from NS&I.

The only urgent letters I can remember getting are legal stuff - contracts to be signed for a house move etc.
For the amount of times it happens (once every 10 years at most) it would almost be worth paying a courier to hand deliver it and wait while it was signed then return it to the solicitors.
For everything else a delay of a few days isn't a big deal. Pretty much anything urgent these days can be sent by email and a digital signature is accepted as proof of delivery.

Parcels & mail order are a different discussion...

The Royal Mail Letter stuff can be large letter up to 25mm thick, we use both small and large letter services for the parts we send out which are often needed to get cars back on the road so next day is good for us, the likes of the couriers are expensive for smaller items
