Thinners for Aldi metal paint

Aldi do a great metal paint in an aerosol can. Unfortunately they don't do the aerosols very often, but they do the same stuff in a tin. I want to use the paint to do the sills and inside of the boot of my Saab project once the welding is finished. The car is black and the paint dries to a very hard semi-gloss black.

What thinners should I use? What ratio of thinners to paint? I would hope to be able to spray it through a small smart repair gun. Thanks for any suggestions.

I used the same stuff in an air brush and just used some turps to thin it with, worked well and drying time remained as advertised.
Not sure what ratio you will require, for the airbrush I had to thin it a fair bit.

The white in the aerosol is not the same colour as the stuff in the tin, bright white in the aerosol and off White in the tin. So make sure you do a couple of test panels for a colour match.

I never thought of that, Mike, just assumed it would be the same stuff. I will do a patch test as suggested. I have used the aerosol to do the bodywork behind the bumper and was impressed so wanted to do the boot too - won't be seen much but will need to be the same shade.

Hi Steve. I thought it was only me, Anjum, and BillJ on here who liked welding up Saabs. It's a c900 Aero. It had an mot when I bought it, but instead of enjoying it for a year I started tinkering, ended up sorning it and lost my mojo for it last year. However, back on it now. The rust is worse than we thought initially. Holes in corner of boot, door bottoms, sills, wheel arches. Had been stood in the garage yard for ages and the interior was soaking wet, but it was pretty cheap. Bit more of a project than anticipated but just doing a little at a time and making steady progress using the big bad ass welder bought from the forum. It has 200k + miles on it so can't justify an expensive restoration, but enjoying finding bargain bits for it.

CumbriaSteve - Thanks for that info. I never even thought of turps. If it works with turps I guess it would work with any of the cheap universal thinners you can get.

same here. mix some up and do a test piece somwhere it dont matter 1st

The only problem sometimes mixing celly thinners into oil based paints, you`ll may find the edge of the old paint will curl and react, (it dont like the celly thinners) not too sure what the Aldi based stuff is, I wash out in anything thats handy at the time.

There are a few cheap thinners on the metalflake site, presumably mostly for use with 2k paint. Might get some of the cheap universal thinners and try that. Presumably you would just thin it till it sprayed OK. I got a Lidl spraygun last week - were reduced to a tenner - so will give that a go.

My friend sprayed his motorbike frame with aldi black paint and used cheapest cellulose thinners 1:1 and it came out fine but it did take a day to cure.

yes household paint will spray no problem with celly thinners . untill u go to re coat using it and it melts the original household gloss paint and crincles up

Look on the tin, it tells you how to clean up the brush etc, use the same material to thin it.
