I made one today out of an old axe head and a U clamp

Please post a picture of one you have made.

Mine needs cleaning up and a point ground on the head but you get the idea.

thats almost a bit of sculpture-with a practical use-not sure about using my chopper as a third hand though as I still use mine now and then.

I have made two or three of those,(without the axe head) I took Jodies advise on "welding tips and tricks" and brazed a layer of brass onto the three contact points for better conductivity. Also stripped the insulation from a couple of feet of heavy welding earthing cable to wind round jobs that you do not want any arc strikes on.

exactly that. the single point is placed on the work piece in order to steady it so you have both hands free to weld.

it will also allow you to jump your earth from the table to a point closer to the weld area as it is conductive.

do a YT search for weldingtipsandtricks and watch his video about 3rd hands. explains it all.
