A sheet of steel and a hammer.
Some rod and a welder.
Oh and quite a few hours

Sort of. I welded 3 pieces of different thickness rod together, welded some extra bits round it in places, then stuck it in the pillar drill and blended it with a power file. Ball bearing is welded on top.
It's far from perfect, but I was not aiming for perfect.

A small lathe would be very useful, as obviously a cheap pillar drill was never meant for side loads, but it will have to do for now.
