Thread identification

I have a Granada automatic shift stick with a thread down the first two inches. I was hoping it was a standard thread, but alas not (it seems).

An M8 nut feels right but jams before the thread emerges. A 5/16" UNF screws down all the way but is very "rattly". Any ideas what the thread might be? I need to make an expander bush to allow a "boy racer" gearknob to fit properly.

I'm not sure, I was hoping someone would recognise my crude test result and tell me authoritatively. ;-)

Sounds like 5/16" UNC to me, A M8 nut will go on most of the way and then jam. <-- Course NOT Fine!
