Bit of a daft name for this thread, but I guess a serious subject I.e. FUMES.

I've only been Arc welding for a couple of weeks, but I've noticed I've developed a bit of a niggling cough that won't go away.

I'm actually welding outside in the yard, and I'm trying to stay out the way of the fumes, but it seems to be getting right on my chest. I've never had any bother in the past when my dads been welding in the garage.

Anybody else affected? Can the rods sometimes have a dodgy compound in them which acts as an irritant?

your not welding galvanised steel are you mate as this is a big no no with regards to the bad fumes

sniffing any fumes can afect u in a diffrent way. some people are more resistant to it than others. looks like your not

No just practising on mild steel.

There is a lot of pollen about at the moment, could just be a mild form of hay fever.

If you ever find yourself struggling to get to sleep, have a read of the material data sheets for welding wire/rods. There's some nasty old stuff given off, especially on stainless.

Problem is probably made worse by the fact that you are not 'used' to breathing in such rubbish. A fume mask worn under your helmet is ideal for small welding jobs. We switched over to air fed helmets a few years ago, i found i didn't spend so long hacking my guts up every morning.

If i'm doing the old quick weld at work, and i don't bother putting the air pack on i can tell i've been breathing the rubbish in.

They have ALL got dodgy compounds in them. You might be sensitive to something but you are doing the right thing by keeping out of the fumes. I dont know why youve got a cough so my advice would be to go see the Doc.

Well done you for being concerned, wish I had been as sensible when younger.

As mentioned, anything other than clean air is not good for the lungs, protect yourself when welding and grinding etc but do not accept it may be the welding that has caused it, so same advice as TechnicAl... if over 2 weeks of coughing.. see the Doc.

I remember years ago we got some cheapo rods in and they made me feel rough , they smelt when burning and made your eyes water , gave them a miss the next time round !

Been welding thirty years. The only thing I have ever had a problem with is Galvanised metal.

But I have suffered from paint inhalation problems.

A note of caution: Please be careful with the use of two pack paint & fillers, the free isocyanide that is expelled from the accelerant in these products, can on rare occasions be fatal, but can in some unlucky people, cause sensitization, leading to lifetime of asthma type symptoms, I am one of those unlucky people and can never spray or be exposed to this type of paint/chemical again, without severe breathing problems getting worse after each instance of exposure. Please email if you want any more detail on this or are worried about the risk. I will explain the facts to you, as I wished someone had explained it to me! Cough wheeze cough............. Good news, as from January 2008, Cellulose, 2-pack & Maxibase will be not available for use. The only paint systems legal to be used after then will be, waterbased & Ultra high Solids Solvent Systems. We have experimented spraying with MaxMeyer Aquabase with some success, using distilled water as thinners & cleaning guns with tap water. Colour costs will increase by appoximately 20% but coverage is 25% better. Avoid water based systems that use HMdi as an accelerant as these will still cause breathing problems.

does anyone know of a dust/fume mask that is compatible to one who wheres glasses?? I really struggle at work with the masks that are supplied as me goggles keep steaming up.

i wear glasses and all the disposable masks steam my glasses up your better off getting anti fog spray on your glasses to stop it

Occupational / Allergic Asthma (induced by the rods/grinding) (wife is an artist and she now can't use some of the solvents as she has developed a sensitivity to them and occupational asthma comes on if she is near them...)

I hear turpentine can be bad with some in that regard. It'd gut me if I ever became sensitised to the stuff. One of the most useful solvents I've ever encountered, IMHO.

I need glasses for close work, includes welding, so I bought one of these http://www.duckworksbbs.com/tools/resp/ And it works very well, plus, the filters are behind you, so last longer.

Will that mask fit under a welding mask? Also what filters are appropriate ?
