I'll be having a go at some point. No real reason ither than I can, so I will at this point, but a good technique to have in the drawerThat's a process I would like to try. I often get asked to repair cast iron stuff but usually refuse as my results stick welding cast are not very successful.
I have had good success using the 99% nickel stick rods, cleaning the flux off them and using them as TIG filler. I bought out an engineering shop that was closing down entire 40 year collection of various MMA rods for next to nothing. I found 15-20kg of various cast iron repair rods in the mix, they didn't run very well as mma electrodes but after cleaning the flux off, work as excellent nickel TIG filler rods. I thought I should buy a few new CI electrodes and a 10 pack costs about 3 times what I paid for the entire load of old rods, I'll keep cleaning off the flux and using them with TIG for now, probably have enough to last me until I die considering the small amount of cast iron work I end up doing.
I'm keen on improving my TIG brazing skills as I think its a more gentle process than TIG nickel rod repairs. Though they both certainly have there place.
