i got an air compresser used inoften see on one of these fourms that you need to drain water is this right

and when in use the first dialon the left is aways near the red line when the unit stop when charging air is this normal ?

can any one say what the other dial is with the red noob on the top and there is a small tap type before the glass bowl whats this for ?

the 1st dial is cylinder pressure the second is a regulator and that dial indicates working pressure that you adjust with the red knob, the water drain is underneath the cylinder the other red thing is a tap tur turn off air flow and last device looks like a water filter

I have never drained the unit how do I do this safely

just open the tap on the bottom of the tank


do it full of air and up to pressure and the water will shoot out

do it with the tank empty/no pressure and it'll dribble out


I've always done it at pressure, but if you don;t use the compressor much just open the tap wide and leave it overnight to drain ? - in the morning I'd leave the tap open and turn the compressor on, there won;t be much pressure, but the flow of air should push any last bits of water out / push out any crap blocking the tap

More on the compresser have been worried about this for a few months but please see pic the unit when on start up way ways goes in the red just inside but there all the same

And I can't a just the pressure looking at the 1/2 inch air tool inpact needs at max 6.2 bar but i can a just it to 6.2 but on the unit turning on again it goes up the 8 bar thr 2nd valve not working properly ?

When you opened the valve to drain the water did you get any air out of it ?

no i expected a drop of water no not erven a drop i left it an hour with a bowl under it but after that assumed there is no water in there and sealed it up do i need to do it with pressure ? surely a drop or 2 would come out after all this time

When you opened the valve to drain the water did you get any air out of it ?

I have had valves bung up with crud from the tank and still not flow with the tank at 120 psi, had to have a poke around with a bit of wire then it soon flows.

Can you hear anything sloshing about inside the tank?
It would be very unusual to have no water inside.

If you got nothing at all from it, it's blocked and needs cleaning

more than likely even with pressure it may be blocked . mine was so pricked it under pressure with a bit of wire . then got a face full of oil and water mixed when it blew

I think we have all been there at some point.
I normally replace them with a length of pipe and a valve on the end.

The other classic is a tray under the valve to catch the water, then finding you need to tip the tray to get it out past the valve dumping most of the dirty water back on the floor you were trying to keep clean in the first place.

I've never had it blow onto me, my first comp was an old atlas copco and the drain was high up on the receiver so must have had an I terns pipe down to the bottom, when I did eventually get it moving it was like a never ending worm coming out

Make sure it has pressure in it before opening, if it is blocked release all the pressure before removing the drain valve to clean

pressurise it to about 12 psi then open it if air comes out its empty if no air or water comes out its blocked .then check it out

just had a quick play and yes after a quick poke with a cable heared a glug and got about a teacup of water
