Timber Winch

Needed a powerful portable lightweight winch that could run all day for weeks on end pulling willow out of a lake and onto an island complete with roots, nothing out out there readily available with the kind of grunt needed for less than 2k , we built a frame, mounted a S/H capstan landy winch and powered it with a new Loncin 6.5hp four stroke engine thats got a 2/1 reduction box on it. I used all the landy shafts which I cut down and machined up a drive hub for the ball drive which normally goes on the landy crank.

Shortened the Landy driveshaft



Spun up a hub on the lathe and milled in the drive slots





Vid of the rest of the brackets and gizmos with it staked to the ground doing its stuff. Its on its third day of graft now Clock the cut down cv boot on the driveshaft, its grease filled.

Our old nuffield winch tractor with a snatch block is rated at 20 ton line pull .






But the problem is the mode of transport to the island hence the lightweight winch., even the dogs wont go in it

We have a really steep field with a massive fallen beech tree at the bottom, a capstan winch like that would be perfect for hauling up dumpy bags full of logs.

Nowt wrong with a punt My other punt has a winch, hiab and chipper on it and the original plan was to tear out the willow with the hiab but could not get my low loader within a mile of the place, hence the tidler winch.

The counties are awesome machines, worked one on and off for a couple of years. Not much stops them. Had a igluund double drum winch on the back, would pull anything you could get a chain round.

My Grandad did heavy recovery and he built a County with AEC Matador winches front and rear. That was a beast! Used to take it down the Essex marshes to recover Catapillars that had got stuck. I'll try and find a photo of it.

an old version but the front of yhe log should make it easier to slide

another reference you could make a continuous pull system by using the cable car system

this one is a chain one pulled half a mile pulling metal karts that just v slotted into the chain up the ramp via tracks

From the days of having a crappy old landy for work. I think we were meant to have the engine sitting at 1000 rpm to get something like 20ft of rope in per minute. This is from memory so could and may well be wrong
