My lad has been playing using an old smartphone as a time lapse recorder. He's printed a bracket that attaches to the printer gantry. On that is a micro switch I salvaged from work. There's that, a 220 Ohm resistor and an old audio lead with a 4-pole 3.5mm jack plug on. It says to use a pair of old headphones but the wires are a pita to strip.
Basically, after every layer the print head moves across on the X, hits the switch and triggers the camera to take a still.
