To much work ? Convert compresser

Ok im thinking I have a I think 50ltr air master
I've been wanting a belt driven one for ages and been keeping an eye out
This belt driven unit has come off and indesoll compresser that was working but in a bit of a state
The air tank had a pin hole in it and retired leaving the motor and air compressor redundant

Now can I swap out my direct drive unit for the belt one ?

There is no mounting points for the new belt drive one so how to mount ?
I'm assuming no welding on the tank is a good idea ?

Receivers come up frequently.

You might consider selling the existing unit complete, and sticking a receiver in a "low value" bit of storage, and keeping the compressor itself mounted independently somewhere?

They're stuck together out of convenience, but they don't have to be at all.

yea ive seen tanks come round now and again and the best bet would be to wait untill a new tank comes along but you now will never find one when i want one now

i did think i could weld a repair in the old tank but i think thats not a good idea with compress air

yes was my first thought but the mount point is very small and the foot print of the motor and compresser i think it will have a massive overhang by a foot or more

Maybe spend your time making a decent independent mount for the belt drive and use the (complete) existing unit as a receiver.

Then when an independent receiver comes up, you can just sell the existing unit complete?

I wouldn’t be welding that lot on the small tank. I’m no expert but I expect smaller tanks are thinner, and you want to put a vibrating, heating, cooling thing on top of something quite small, and likely thin.
I’m with @Barking Mat the porcupine kid, get a 45kg propane bottle..

a mid size tank also is 3mm



fit wider legs onto top of gas bottle spin bottle upside down hole cut for weldable fitting use the right size weldable fitting and weld it pour a chunk of paint in slosh around and drain make up new stand weld to the base of the gas bottle fit up and plumb in your new vertical air compressor

That would work and be quicker than making one, making one is easy too but cutting the old one off is even easier. Then just mount it somewhere separate to whatever receiver you end up using.

A vertical receiver is a much better use of space.

Make a skid up for your pump and motor and just tee the output into your old direct drive compressor.
This will allow you to make use of the 50L tank without messing about welding stuff to it and also the ability to add a bit of extra cfm if you need it by firing up the direct drive.

A bigger receiver is nice to have as a buffer, but it is the cfm that drives the tools.
If a larger tank comes up at a later date then it isn't the end of the world to weld some brackets on it to attach the skid.

I'm not sure my welding is up to adding valves to a tank if it was I'd just fix the old one


Vertical sounds nice but as can be seen I've got x space a vertical one would mean changing every thing around again

I'm thinking getting the old tank and then cutting off as thr bolt holes are there etc yes sounds a quick fix and I can cheak it out before commiting to riping stuff apart

I'm sure I'm able to do that
But it's am high risk bet
I can weld fitting on them yes I can but I'd do it by using 7018 and eventually pass over again using Tig no filler
Surely hydro testing after it has cooled off, maybe at around 20 bar

I'll defer to those with more knowledge and experience on the subject, but I wouldn't have thought tacking on brackets to the outside of a tank is quite the same as welding the cylinder itself.
Or put another way, I've got an old HGV tanks that has been converted in to a compressor by welding bits of angle iron on to the tank to mount the motor and pump, and that has been fine - not the first one done like that either.

Often tanks will come with some sort of brackets or lugs already welded on, in which case all you have to do is adapt the skid to mount to the tank.
Or indeed if you are concerned, just leave the skid separate, no reason it has to be mounted to the tank at all.

an upside down gas bottle has an internal lip so dosnt drain properly however its painted so saves the internal sides rather well from rusting

heres an air master air compressor tank no paint and rusty inside 3mm

some gas bottles are painted with white paint inside the 47kg is def painted inside the 19kg one is also painted



so lets make a compressor tank
