To Powder coat or paint gates.

Hello.
As the above title says I've a set of gates which require finishing post galvanising. The customer wants a black finish and I've been doing a bit of research on both processes and seem to be getting conflicting advice.

Can anyone advise. The gates are a 16ft set of gates with intricate scoll work. Would powder coating offer better coverage and protection.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

My powdercoater doesn't like coating over galvanized, it tends to peel off again. The powder coat likes a rough finish to cling to so he will always sandblast stuff before coating, something you can't do on galvanized!

paint ,at least you can touch them up or recoat a rusty part , powdercoat your stuck with blisters with water underneath ,seen many a bullbar ruined because of it.

From my experence powder coat is only long term reliable for items kept inside in dry damp free environments.
All it takes is one tiny chip, surface defect or scratch and the moisture find its way in via a capillary action and slowly eats its way into the part under the powder coat until if flakes off.
Depending on your application either galv and a quality paint or primer and paint.

Paint them. There are some railings across the road that were powder coated and they are peeling now after about 3 years and when the peel flicks off there's more rust underneath than you expected.

Epoxy paint with a hard coat on top to inhibit UV.
I watched contractors painting a bridge near us back in 1993 and it still looks good today - a nice fetching coat of blue!

I got the frame on the triumph powder coated a few years back and its falling off in chunks. Worst thing i ever did, Paint everytime from now on. Anyone know a tough uv stable paint for things like that ?

Galv then paint, mine have lasted well over 20 years and still no rust, I have only repainted as the paint started to fade

Don't know how many of you follow SV Seeker on YouTube but they have done some tests on coatings. Latest results just came in...

Coal tar epoxy over POR seems to be the winner...

Coal tar epoxy in Europe? I doubt it will be the same! Tends to be old hat now.
Jotun Epoxy zinc or aluminium with hardtop over. That is the sort of stuff they use on bridges etc.
Leighs paints are awesome - British company taken over by Americans sadly but still made here. I bought some years ago for a LR chassis - still going strong.
Not cheap though - £140 v £50 for Jotun!

I wouldn't touch the stuff personally. Blasting followed by epoxy with a top coat for UV protection.

I’m not convinced about powder coating, I have a winch frame that is powder coated, it’s just a year old and rusting badly. It has no moving parts to cause wear. If I was to coat a gate i would paint it

Yes I have worked on Plating Lines, the transporter units have been powder coated and you get corrosion in corners where plates join.
