I've been practicing TIG'ing over the weekend on stainless automotive exhaust sections (Jetex) - by cutting through the sections then welding them back together again.
I found that I could get a really neat smooth butt weld join without using filler rod by just fusing the pipes back together with just the TIG flame.
I could also do the same with the lap joints - the Jetex sections are swaged so one pipe end can fit over the end of another and are snug so there is no gap between the outer and inner pipe.
My question is, should I really be adding filler into the weld pool, or is this method of joining perfectly acceptable (with particular reference to welding automotive exhaust systems and manifolds....)?
