Hello,

I would like to fabricate a tool safe as one of my first welding projects.
I have been burgled once and want to keep what i have left.
Does anybody know where i can get plans or ideas from.

Hello Mike,

if you plan to close it with a hasp and staple (padlock) box that in as it prevents anyone using bolt croppers on the lock.

The locks you put on the back of a vehicle are pretty good. Maybe a tad more than your budget for a lock though.

The box and lid making will be quite simple, but figure out some internal type hinges, like your car bonnet type etc, also on the lock,make a multi-bolt system with an external handle,but use a decent 5 lever mortice lock where the lock tongue only locks the mechanism. No lock on show only a key-hole. I have fitted this sort of system to my double up and over garage, shoots 4 spring loaded bolts with only a small handle and keyhole on show

If you scout about you can find the "puck type" locks quite cheap,I picked up 2 new ones for £8-00 each, you can always make the "hasp/housing" to suit your requirement (as in my pic's on the trailer lock 11 thread,

Whatever locking system you use, make sure there is a locked point that requires shear force to break it at each of the front corner /edges to stop some Samson bending the lid /door back across the corner.

Hopefully as it's a tool"safe" and not just a toolbox I would be making the main body and lid from at least 3mm plate, this should rule out even the most severe "human" attack.
Lack of visible hinges and locks might confuse the low life scum for a little while.
We could do with an idea of how big the box needs to be. Is it just for hand tools or may be needed larger items like drills,transformers or Sthil saws etc.

Depends on the facilities you have acess to, give us an idea.

I made a box for the back of my van, 1.5mm sheets, with a 5 lever mortice lock....

You could try some mortise hook bolts. Like these
If you use a pair throwing in opposite directions and inset the lid there is no way of prizing the lid off. However I would conceal the euro key cylinder as they would be the weakest point for attack by drill or snapping.

I intent to put all power tools in it even my new welder when i decide which one...lol.
The safe will be around 42"long 40" tall and about 30"deep.
The idea is to have used as a work bench also.

I was thingking of more like a safe that doubles as a bench but that type of box with a good locking system would also come in handy.

If you are intending to use as a bench as well, probably would be better if it was designed as a cupboard type with front opening door/doors,

Exactly - so what you're really after is a welding table with some sturdy doors so you can store stuff underneath?
