Top and base coat difference!

This may be a daft question but what is the difference between top coat and base coat?

I am getting ready to spray the axle case and suspension components for my Midget and after pervious posts on what to use I am going down the epoxy primer then black high gloss top coat route.

So I firstly need to know the difference so I am buying the right thing

Secondly anyone got any suggestions on a good high gloss top coat to use.

base coat is part of a base coat and clear system...a matt basecoat to colour the job then clear to make the shine

top coat im guessing you mean straight /direct gloss ....just paint it on and it shines job done
