Trailer tire pressure

Hi All,

I've a new to me trailer with 195/55R10C tires under it - it's a small (6x4) ifor williams.

The tyre pressure for these tyres seems to be 90 psi which is a lot coming from car tyres.

The trailer gross weight is 1000 kg, so maximum 500 kg per tire. For now it will be much less lightly loaded.

Any advice on what's a sensible or correct pressure would be much appreciated.

I cant see why trailers are any different from vans etc. but on the Michelin web site there is a chart giving axle loads against tyre sizes, this is used for campers & vehicles that run permanently loaded.

I have 195/50 R13 on my trailer and the recommended pressure is 90psi but they run far smoother with 60psi in them.

I have 165 13 on my trailer( twin axle) tyres are at 65 psi

My caravan, weight circa 1200kg, runo with tyres at 65 psi….

Higher psi trailer tyres take a lot better to being kerbed or hitting potholes. Due to the small size and high loading they suffer sidewall damage far more frequently than cars.

What is meant by "coming from car tyres"

My Brian James trailer has a chassis plate with tyre pressures on - does your trailer have similar?

Big wheels, single axle, runs 3.2Bar - bounces nicely empty - tows lovely loaded.

He means car tyres are typically in the region around 30 - 35 psi, so based on this experience 90psi would seem rather high.
However trailer, caravan and motorhome tyres are typically ran at significantly higher pressures. HGVs are another step up again.

depends a lot how you load it

once you start running heavy a tyre that's a bit flat at the bottom is flexing like crazy as it spins while you do 60mph... makes them get hot, major cause of blow outs

Agree completely. Stick to the manufacturer figures is my advice.

The max tyre pressure depends a lot on the construction of the tyre. If they are standard 4 ply car tyres I would suggest that you dont go much over 45 psi.

If they are 6 or 8 ply van or trailer tyres they can take much higher pressures, the max pressure is often on the sidewall of the tyre.

But as has been suggested, it depends on what the tyre is fitted to as to what pressures you use. I have 8 ply tyres on my van, recommended pressure 55psi. My twin axle car transporter also has 8 ply tyres, inflated to 65psi.

He doesn’t fit 6 ply, or more, rated tyres to his car.

Brian James trailers do tow well. I’ve a general plant trailer, empty or loaded it behaves. Very quiet too, no rattles or squeaks

Follow the manufacturer's instructions, or have a good explanation for vosa.

I always thought the max pressure on the tyre sidewall was just for seating the bead not what pressure to actually run them at?

Ie if the bead hasn't seated by 30 psi etc you need to demount and relube or theres a risk of damaging the tyre bead
