transfers and coach lines

i was looking for some advice on painting
iv got a bike i want to restore and am now at the stage of paint
iv got two pinstripes and also the main transfer to go on. putting the base coat on is fine but have never put transfers on
as i need to lacquer after wards and am worried about them sticking out more
the question is how do i over come this so it doesn't feel bumpy

apply the base coat give it a couple of coats of lacquer let it cure flat it, apply your transfers and lacquer, in order to stop the transfers sticking out you would have to keep lacquering

after applying the stickers and putting lacquer on would that flow out ok with a couple of coats of lacquer

ideally if you want a totally flat finish you would have to flat the stickers more inbetween coats so you build up around it, but don't apply stickers to base coat, base coat isn't supposed to be touched so seal first with lacquer

i would 1200 the first coats of clear then let it dry for a good while to be sure its fully cure...solvents will bubble the sticker otherwise

then more clear , if you want it dead flush you will have to sand and redo it until its flat , you wont bury them with a couple of coats

Leave the stickers (and waterslide decals) overnight before clearing over them too. Vinyl ones take a ton of clear to bury and the end results looks very over-cleared. Clear a bit, sand over them, re-clear etc till buried.

Did one job where the bloke insisted I use them even though I offered to mask & paint the lines instead. First lot weren't solid enough colour and the base showed through too much, despite coming from a place with a good name and weren't cheap. Next lot kept lifting at the ends (before clear - not enough tack to them)

thanks very much for the reply's i truthfully was going to apply them straight onto the base coat
but will lacquer first and then apply i really need to apply the decals so will post pics on how i get on with doing the job

I went down a different route, I used the transfers to make a stencil out of low tack air brush masking film. Then painted them in before lacquer for the GTE logo's on my car, same again for a fuel tank for my father inlaw. It's not the best job in the world prehaps but does look ok, certainly flatter than stickers under the lacquer.

but some of the transfers are a bit complicated so will have togo with the transfers
the spray on the norton tank is really good though thanks
