Transporting Acetylene...

I have done a search on here and google, but cannot find a great deal on the subject.

I do unerstand the guidelines to follow when transporting Acetylene bottles. Apart from following the guidelines, would you still require a permit to transport Acetylene? If so, any links to the information would be great.

I guess the most important thing to ensure that you have told your insurance company, Some insurance companys policies will not cover transportation of Commercial Gas Bottles, and you place the appropriate safety stickers on the back of your car The red diamond ones with Flamable gas written on.

When I worked as a plant few a few years back I had O/A in my van the insurance was £1500 a year extra the bottles where strapped in and warning sticker on the back door.

But that was it, never had any other probloems.

Thats because the Fire brigade take it seriously, They have to let the bottles cool for 24 hrs before attempting to move it and have a 200 metre exclusion zone, so imagine you car caught fire on the motorway, Like the A12 a few years back, Funny enough it was a Fire bridage Workshop Van that caught fire, They closed the A12 for a whole day

Plus if your using it for your work make sure your business insurance covers you for this, I had to pay another £1000 extra which i wouldn't of had to pay had i used propane.

Now i use use propane for cutting and heating, I don't do gas welding at all

I see plumbers, fabricators, etc 10 times a day drive around with oxy/acetylene bottles on the back of utes. No stickers or warning labels. I have never heard of any serious accidents either.
Of course, I realize the regs may be diffrent in Australia from the UK.
